To farmer John: most of the people still seem to enjoy the film from the visual (in other words, technical) point of view; they look at the battle scene and see the battle scene, regadless of what's behind it. No one says that the existence of such animals itself is not real (everybody seems to accept the fantastic nature of those),but the cavalry reaction - that's what strikes most. The riders are people, fantasy or not, and we expect some common sense logic from them. If jackson made them counterattack the beasts in columns rather than lines, it wouldn't make the film any worse, but rather'd make it more real without damaging its fantastic background. It concerns this particular point and lots of other, I flamed about it quite a lot before in this forum but quit having been squashed by the fans :-). Make a large stone not just hit the ground and get glued to it on the spot, but roll 30ft farther or dig a trench - and 1M of critics turn to true fans :-)
